A few Spring Chinook were caught on the bay this past week, but overall fishing continues to be slow and sporadic both in the upper an

d lower bay. Hopefully, there will be some better days in June, but at this point it’s looking like a low run year. Popular techniques include trolling herring or spinners, Bobber fishing bait, and fishing plugs.

TRASK RIVER: steelhead, spring Chinook, trout

The “Hatchery Hole,” 200 feet upstream and 900 feet downstream of Gold Creek at the Trask Hatchery will close to all fishing from June 18 to Oct. 15. Fishery managers are concerned that without a closure the low run size this year will not produce enough broodstock at the hatchery for the next generation of fish.

The rain over the weekend brought a few fish up river, but overall Spring Chinook fishing remains slow to fair, and somewhat sporadic. All indications are that it’s going to be a relatively low run year. Using good bait and fishing early will improve odds.

There are a few summer steelhead showing up on the Trask as well.

As of May 1, a gear restriction will be in place: from the marker at Loren’s Drift upstream to the Cedar Creek Boat slide (River Mile 10.9) fishing is restricted to fly-fishing or bobber fishing until July 31. See the Salmon/Steelhead Bobber Fishing Rule on page 18 of the regulations for details.

The North Coast Rivers open for trout fishing on May 22. There are some nice cutthroat around, and these aggressive fish can be fun to catch. Most of the rivers are restricted to artificial lures and flies above tidewater until Aug. 31, so check the regulations before you go.

WILSON RIVER: steelhead, spring Chinook, Summer steelhead are starting to show up on the Wilson River, and the run will continue to improve over the next month or more. Low clear water can make fishing for summer steelhead challenging, but there can be some good action. Drift fishing, spinners, and flies are good choices. Light line, small presentations, and fishing the riffles and deep pools at first and last light can increase success.

There are still a few spring Chinook available in the Wilson River, although numbers will be low. Bobber and eggs or sand shrimp, drift fishing, back bouncing, and divers and bait are all good techniques for springers; these fish can be finicky, but are worth the effort!
